Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of the Lord/On the first day
of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it
was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
Holy Gospel of Jesus
Christ according to Saint John 20/01-09/On the first day of the week, Mary
of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark,
and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter
and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken
the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him." So Peter and
the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the
other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent
down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon
Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths
there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths
but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the
one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did
not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

How We
Can Understand The Holy Concept Of Resurrection
Elias Bejjani/April 01/18
http://eliasbejjaninews.com/archives/63577
Don’t be amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He
has risen. He is not here (Mark 16/05)
Easter Sunday is a holy feast of love, humility, forgiveness, brotherhood,
tolerance and repentance.
Religiously and consciously we are not supposed to participate by any means
in any of the feast prayers or make any offerings or receive the Holy
Communion unless we are genuinely replace hatred with love, grudges with
forgiveness, rejection of others with tolerance, arrogance with humility,
greed with contentment, deception with transparency, and evil with
righteousness.
Do not be afraid, “Don’t be amazed”, with these reassuring and soothing
words The Angel spoke to Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and
Salome. They had came to the tomb on Sunday morning to mummify and anoint
Jesus’ Body as the Jewish tradition required. They thought death had
defeated Jesus and ended His life as it does to every human being. On their
way, they were sadly thinking and wondering who will roll for them the stone
away from the tomb’s entrance so they can get in and perform the mummifying
and anointing process. While halfway from the tomb, they saw that the
enormous stone had been rolled away. When they entered the tomb they found
that Jesus’ body was not there. They found only the shrouds that His body
was wrapped with on His burial after the crucifixion.
Saint Mark’s (16/01-13) Gospel describes thoroughly what has happened with
these three loyal and faithful women: “When the Sabbath was, past Mary
Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they
might come and anoint him. 16:2 Very early on the first day of the week,
they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. They were saying among
themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”
for it was very big. Looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back.
Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side,
dressed in a white robe, and they were amazed. He said to them, “Don’t be
amazed. You seek Jesus, the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen.
He is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him! But go, tell his
disciples and Peter, ‘He goes before you into Galilee. There you will see
him, as he said to you.’” They went out, and fled from the tomb, for
trembling and astonishment had come on them. They said nothing to anyone;
for they were afraid. Now when he had risen early on the first day of the
week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven
demons. She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and
wept. When they heard that he was alive, and had been seen by her, they
disbelieved. After these things he was revealed in another form to two of
them, as they walked, on their way into the country. They went away and told
it to the rest. They didn’t believe them, either.”
Lord Jesus who died on the cross, had risen from the dead on the third day
just as He has said while proclaiming His message. He triumphed over death,
defeated the forces of darkness, overcame pain, abolished anguish and
brought despair to an end. He rose from the tomb to be constantly with those
faithful to Him throughout their lives, and to never abandon them. He shall
empower forever those who believe in His message and observe His
commandments with the spirit of truth, knowledge, wisdom and solidarity with
His Father, Almighty God.
Christ is the Way, Christ is the Truth, and Christ is the actual eternal
life that we long for. We strongly believe with full conviction that Christ
dwells in His Holy Church, and exists in its Mysteries (Sacraments). He is
always present in the Holy Eucharist that we receive during every mass.
Christ at all times is ready, willing and delighted to help us in our
burdens when we call on Him and ask for His mercy. “Come to me, all you who
labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 11:29 Take my yoke
upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you
will find rest for your souls. 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is
light.” (Matthew11:28)
The miracle of resurrection is the cornerstone of our Christian faith. This
pivotal liturgical fact was strongly stressed by Saint Paul in his First
Letter to the Corinthians, (15/12-26): ” Now if Christ is preached, that he
has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no
resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead,
neither has Christ been raised. If Christ has not been raised, then our
preaching is in vain, and your faith also is in vain. Yes, we are found
false witnesses of God, because we testified about God that he raised up
Christ, whom he didn’t raise up, if it is so that the dead are not raised.
For if the dead aren’t raised, neither has Christ been raised. If Christ has
not been raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. Then they
also who are fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have only hoped in
Christ in this life, we are of all men most pitiable. But now Christ has
been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are
asleep. For since death came by man, the resurrection of the dead also came
by man. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.
But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then those who are
Christ’s, at his coming. Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the
Kingdom to God, even the Father; when he will have abolished all rule and
all authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies
under his feet. The last enemy that will be abolished is death”.
Through Crucifixion and resurrection, Christ has overcome death, broke its
thorn, and granted us His eternal forgiveness from the original sin. With
His death and resurrection, death in its traditional earthly human concept
has been abolished forever and Sin since then has become the actual death
that leads the sinners to Gahanna into the unquenchable fire.
When our bodies die, we sleep in the hope of resurrection. On Jesus’ return
on the Day of Judgment, the dead will be the first to rise and escort Him.
“Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be
changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For
the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we
will be changed”, (Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 15 / 51-52).
Easter Sunday is a holy feast of love, humility, forgiveness, brotherhood,
tolerance and repentance. Religiously and consciously we are not supposed to
participate by any means in any of the feast prayers or make any offerings
or receive the Holy Communion unless we are genuinly replace hatred with
love, grudges with forgiveness, rejection of others with tolerance,
arrogance with humility, greed with contentment, deception with
transparency, and evil with righteousness.
If we do not learn how to tame our selfishness, anger, hatred and forgive
others for whatever evil deeds they commit against us and reconcile with
them, than we do not qualify to be called Jesus’ followers. Our prayers will
not be heard or responded to, if we do not practice the grace of forgiveness
as did He who was crucified for our salvation.
“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember
that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the
altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come
and offer your gift”. (Matthew 5/23-24).
Meanwhile our true faith in Jesus and in His Sacrifices won’t be complete
unless we adopt in our thinking, deeds and language the pure components of
sacrifice, honesty, truth, self respect, meekness and decency. “Let no
corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building
up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. Don’t
grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of
redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put
away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians
4/29-32)
For our prayers to be looked upon and heard by Almighty God, we are required
to reconcile with ourselves and with all others on whom we have inflicted
pain and injustice, and treated with an evil manner. To please the Lord we
are required to genuinely, heartily and overtly perform all required acts of
repentance for all our mischievous conducts and wrongdoings. Mark 11/24-26:
“Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe
that you have received them, and you shall have them. Whenever you stand
praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father,
who is in heaven, may also forgive you your transgressions. But if you do
not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions”
Almighty God has endowed us with His love talent, (minas) and expects us to
faithfully invest it in helping others who are in need. He expect us to
observe all the teaching of His Bible so that He will reward us on the Day
of Judgment and put us on His Right Side.
On this Holy Day of Resurrection, we are ought to be aware that Jesus’ Holy
blood was shed on the Cross for our sake. Remembrance of His death and
resurrection is a Godly consignment that we are entrusted with. It’s up to
us either to honour this trust or betray it. In regards to what is committed
to us, Saint Paul conveyed to his disciple Timothy the following advice
(6/20-21): “Timothy, guard that which is committed to you, turning away from
the empty chatter and oppositions of the knowledge which is falsely so
called; which some professing have erred concerning the faith”.
Halleluiah! Jesus has risen! Indeed He has risen.
The act of
forgiveness is the Core & essence of love, and love is God
Elias Bejjani/31 March 18
http://eliasbejjaninews.com/archives/63547
Today while solemnly we celebrate “The Holy Friday” that personify Our
Lord’s love, sacrifices, Sufferings, pain and tolerance, let us all pray
that Almighty God shall showers on us graces of love and forgiveness.
Jesus taught us in the “Our Father’s prayer” to forgive those who sin
against us, so that He forgives our sins.
Jesus told us that if while presenting our offerings before the altar and
remembered there that we have an unsolved conflict or a certain problem with
anyone, we are ought to immediately abstain from continuing this holy ritual
and go first to reconcile with the one who we have the conflict with, and
afterwards return to carry on presenting the offerings.
Meanwhile our “Holy Bible” emphasizes in dozens of verses that faith without
deeds, is a dead faith, exactly like a body without spirit.
Hence, a person who can not, and does not seek to forgive others, God shall
not forgive his sins.
At the same time all prayers remain futile and worthless in case they are
not genuinely combined at the same time with actual deeds.
Also, all sorts of faith, no matter how strong or solid they might be, shall
remain superficial and incomplete without turning them into righteous deeds.
He who holds grudges, falls a prey to temptations, lives with hatred, and
lets the devil control his life, is a person who does know how to love or
forgive, and does not know Almighty God, because God is love and
forgiveness.
In conclusion, any person no matter how righteous he might be, and does not
know and practice both love and forgiveness he does know Almighty God.
On this “Holy Friday” let us kneel with reverence and call on our loving
Father to grant us and every human being the gifts of forgiveness and love,
and to enlighten our thoughts to clearly realize that faith without deeds is
a dead faith and that God Himself is LOVE and forgiveness.
The Case for U.S.
Support of Lebanon
The National Interest//Saturday 31st March 2018/
When Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MbS) met with
President Trump in Washington in March, the two leaders discussed regional
issues ranging from the Iran nuclear deal to the ongoing wars in Yemen and
Syria. But notably absent from readouts of their conversations was Lebanon
and its internal stability—possibly because MbS is still recovering from
Saudi Arabia’s controversial detention of Lebanese prime minister Saad
Hariri in November. Additionally, MbS and the Trump administration share the
view that Lebanon is already lost to Iranian influence. At a time of greater
Saudi regional activism, the United States should encourage Riyadh’s
attention on renewed investment and constructive engagement in Lebanon,
instead of retreat and defeat.
Hariri’s house arrest was widely viewed as a misstep that only resulted in a
surge of nationalism from many Lebanese bristling at what they saw as Saudi
Arabia’s political interference and violation of their sovereignty. Still,
MbS and the Trump administration believe the only option that remains is to
use aggressive political and economic action to defeat Hezbollah. But U.S.
military officials in the region and numerous regional experts remain
convinced that the only realistic way to contain Hezbollah’s influence in
Lebanon is a more assertive investment in its military, national
institutions, and Hezbollah’s political opponents.
The possibility of another war between Israel and Hezbollah has become more
likely, and would destroy any prospect of a strong Lebanon. Moreover,
experts predict that Lebanon’s parliamentary elections, currently scheduled
for May, will increase Hezbollah’s influence in the government. Similarly,
if the Trump administration withdraws from the Iran nuclear agreement in
May, this could provide a boon to Iran and Hezbollah’s anti-U.S. propaganda.
Should the United States and Saudi Arabia have any interest in competing
with Iran and maintaining a constructive relationship with Lebanon, the
window for a fresh push in that direction is closing.
In an ideal world, American and Saudi policy would cut Hezbollah out of the
Lebanese political system entirely. This understandable but overly ambitious
goal sets up Lebanon—and U.S. and Saudi policy—for failure no matter the
outcome of May’s elections. The United States and Saudi Arabia should
instead minimize the potential damage of May’s elections and build a
long-term plan to bring Lebanon back from political isolation.
While Hezbollah may make significant gains in May, Lebanon’s internal
politics are not entirely in its favor. The Hezbollah-led political
coalition includes Maronite president Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement
and Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri’s Shia political group, Amal. Yet
recent incidents shook the Lebanese public and exposed underlying tension
between these political allies. In January, for instance, a video leaked
showing Foreign Minister (and son-in-law of President Aoun) Gebran Bassil
describing Speaker Berri as a “thug.” Just before the incident, Hezbollah
also finalized an agreement to share a number of parliament seats with Amal
at the expense of the Free Patriotic Movement.
Hezbollah smoothed tensions between the two parties reasonably well, but
made it clear that supporting Amal leader Berri was its priority—possibly
alienating its Christian political allies. Many Christians look to Hezbollah
for protection from Sunni extremists in the region, but recent events have
Lebanese Christians questioning whether Hezbollah will support their
long-term interests. Lebanese Christians also fear that Hezbollah could use
its political power to overhaul Lebanon’s confessional power-sharing system
and give itself greater representation at their expense.
The first priority for the United States and Saudi Arabia should be to
exploit existing political divisions and convince lukewarm Hezbollah allies
that the two countries have more to offer Lebanon than the terror group.
Washington and Riyadh should quietly reach out to Christians and others who
have grown alarmed by Hezbollah’s growing political influence. In past
elections, both Saudi Arabia and the United States have provided support to
Hariri’s Future Movement and its allies. Even if the impact is minimal, it
may be worth resuming this support to rebuild ties to Lebanese political
parties opposed to Hezbollah.
Electoral support and relationship-building with the Future Movement and
other parties, such as the nonsectarian Beirut Madinati coalition and the
Christian Kataeb party, is an important component of this approach.
Lebanon’s revised electoral laws, and greater weariness about Hezbollah,
could provide a greater opportunity for independent parties and candidates
to make gains in parliament. For its part, the United States has not
allocated assistance funds to this critical issue in 2018, and only
allocated paltry funds in previous years. In 2019 and beyond, the United
States and Saudi Arabia should repair this shortfall and also boost funding
for civil-society support grants, exchange programs, and local
infrastructure projects that build ties to Lebanese society.
Second, on the security front, the United States and Saudi Arabia should
resume funding for the Lebanese Armed Forces. Riyadh cut off this assistance
in 2016 after the Lebanese government did not condemn attacks on Saudi
diplomatic missions in Iran. Though the United States cut off Foreign
Military Financing for Lebanon in 2018, it resumes that financing in 2019
and currently provides funding and training to the country’s armed forces
through other sources. However, U.S. military officials were not able to
point to a single meaningful example of assistance, or even engagement,
between Lebanon’s armed forces and other Arab militaries. This regional
isolation remains a serious obstacle to strengthening the Lebanese state and
its ability to confront Hezbollah. The United States and Saudi should also
tap Jordanian training facilities and expertise to build a stronger bridge
between the Lebanese military and another critical U.S. partner.
Saudi will prove difficult to convince in this regard, but the Trump
administration should use all tools necessary to win it over. The
administration used its close relationship with MbS to generate renewed
Saudi attention and involvement in Iraq. Similarly, the administration has
requested $4 billion in stabilization aid from Saudi Arabia for Syria—though
MbS has not publicly agreed to or rejected this request to date.
Third, the United States and Saudi Arabia should work with local journalists
to highlight Iran’s influence in Lebanon. The best way to do so is to
promote media freedom in Lebanon through material and technical support to
independent news outlets and journalists. Lebanon is home to the most open
and robust media landscape in the Arab world, but mainstream journalists
have recently faced legal charges for criticism directed at the Lebanese and
Saudi governments. Outlets sympathetic to Hezbollah or operated by the
terror group remain popular, but they have lost followers in Lebanon,
especially among Sunnis and Christians, because they are increasingly viewed
as a mouthpiece for Iran. This presents a clear opportunity to support
outlets with progressive and independent views that can compete with
pro-Hezbollah voices.
U.S.-Saudi cooperation in Iraq and Syria could greatly enhance efforts to
promote regional stability and counter Iran, but the two countries should
find ways to expand this collaboration to Lebanon. For all its own
imperfections and Hezbollah’s influence, Lebanon remains a rare example of
pluralism and political openness, and a bulwark in a region where many
societies have succumbed entirely to internal chaos and war. As MbS seeks to
reform Saudi Arabia’s own social landscape and counter extremist forces in
the region, Lebanon should not be let go without a fight.
Washington policymakers have long advocated for bilateral relationships that
reflect a broader strategy in the Middle East. To pursue U.S. and Saudi
interests in the region in earnest, any regional approach must include
engaging Lebanon—even if both countries view it as a last-ditch effort.
Israeli
Surveillance Drone Crashes in South Lebanon
Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March, 2018/An
Israeli drone has crashed in southern Lebanon’s Bint Jbeil district, the
state-run National News Agency and Israel’s army said on Saturday. The
unmanned Israeli spy crashed late Friday between the villages of Baraachit
and Beit Yahoun, NNA said. According to the agency, another Israeli drone
later raided the area and fully destroyed the crashed unmanned spy aircraft.
However, two of the missiles it had fired did not explode, prompting a
Lebanese military unit to clear the unexploded ordnance, NNA added. Lebanese
troops and UN peacekeepers threw a security dragnet around the area of the
crash. The Israeli military said the drone had crashed because of a
technical malfunction. "The incident is currently being reviewed. There is
no risk of leaked information,” its statement said. Monday’s crash is the
second of an Israeli drone in southern Lebanon this year. Lebanon regards
Israel’s flying of drones in its airspace as a violation of its national
sovereignty and both countries regularly accuse each other of breaching the
ceasefire agreement that ended the 2006 war between Israel and
“Hezbollah.”On Friday, the Lebanese army said several Israeli warplanes
violated Lebanon’s airspace by overflying the country’s villages and towns
in the South.
Rahi in his Easter
message: We hope the elections yield responsible Statesmen
Sat 31 Mar 2018/NNA - Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rahi hoped
that the forthcoming legislative elections would bring the Lebanese people
responsible political leaders and officials. Rahi, whose words came during
Easter message in Bkirki, said, "I hope that the upcoming parliamentary
elections will bring responsible and conscious statesmen, despite the
dangers caused by the new electoral law on the level of democracy, the
Lebanese Charter, national coexistence and freedom of candidacy." The
Prelate criticized the Lebanese State for not bringing any solutions to
Lebanese citizens, especially in the issue of private schools, calling on
officials to cooperate in this respect. "The private school wants to
preserve teachers' rights, as well as parents and their financial potential,
and the quality of education for students," Rahi said, adding that he will
keep on struggling and sacrificing to protect the educational system in
Lebanon through private schools. The Cardinal also warned of the difficult
economic, social and living conditions that threaten to destabilize the
country's internal steadiness. "Lebanon needs to address the problem of
electricity, its growing debt and its rising deficit, the rampant corruption
in public institutions and tax evasion, the increase in expenditure without
accountability, the increase of employments without production, and the
situation of poverty and deprivation," Rahi went on.He finally prayed for
the displaced and the abducted to return to their homeland, and for war to
end in Syria, Iraq, Palestine and Yemen, consolidating an eternal peace in
the region.
Israel Bombs Site of Crashed Drone in South Lebanon
Associated Press/Naharnet/March 31/18/ An Israeli spy drone crashed Saturday
morning in an area between the southern Lebanese towns of Baraashit and Beit
Yahoun in the Bint Jbeil district, Lebanon's National News Agency said.
Another Israeli drone later bombed the site of the crash in Baraashit's
outskirts, which resulted in the full destruction of the first drone, NNA
said. "Two missiles fell from it but did not explode. A Lebanese Army force
later detonated them as security forces and UNIFIL peacekeepers cordoned off
the area," the agency added. The Israeli army said the drone crashed because
of a technical failure. It added that the incident is being investigated but
that there was no risk of any sensitive information being leaked. Israel
typically uses its unmanned aerial vehicles to conduct surveillance and
gather intelligence along its borders. The drones have become a regular part
of modern warfare and Israel in February shot down an Iranian one that
infiltrated its airspace. In September, Israel shot down a Hizbullah
surveillance drone that veered too close to the Syrian border with Israel.
Its army said the unmanned aircraft was Iranian-made and launched from a
Damascus airport before it was shot down near the Israeli-occupied side of
the Golan Heights. Israel and Hizbullah fought a monthlong war in 2006.
Qobeissi: We Won't Tolerate Attempts to Weaken Speaker
Berri
Naharnet/March 31/18/MP Hani Qobeissi of the AMAL Movement said Saturday
that there are attempts to "weaken" Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. "Some
parties are claiming that they want to rescue, reform and change the country
through random alliances, conspiracies and contacts," Qobeissi said. "Their
main slogan is weakening Speaker Nabih Berri and rejecting his reelection as
parliament speaker," the MP alleged. "This is what we don't tolerate and
will not tolerate," Qobeissi warned. Progressive Socialist Party leader MP
Walid Jumblat had cautioned in remarks published Friday that President
Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri and the Free Patriotic Movement "are
targeting Berri."
Geagea visits Rahi on Easter: Elections our chance to overcome current
situation
Sat 31 Mar 2018/NNA - Lebanese Forces Party Chief, Samir Geagea, described
the situation in Lebanon as being close to "rising from the dead", adding
that the upcoming parliamentary elections are a chance to overcome the
current stalemate conditions in the country and to reach a qualitative
change. Geagea's words came on emerging from his one-hour meeting with
Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros al-Rahi, whom he visited in
Bkirki this evening to offer Easter greetings and well-wishes. Geagea
disclosed that he deliberated at length with the Patriarch over the
prevailing situation, both sharing their outlook on the course of matters in
the country. He wished all Lebanese would take their fate into their hands
in the next elections by voting in the right direction, saying, "We hope
that the Lebanese will vote properly."
Islamic detainees' families protest in Tripoli in
demand for general amnesty
Sat 31 Mar 2018/NNA - Families of the Islamic detainees staged a sit-in
outside Al Saddiq Mosque in Tripoli on Saturday, demanding general amnesty
for their sons, NNA correspondent reported. The families erected two tents
in the area, confirming their continued sit-in until the amnesty law is
passed.
Geagea: With Kataeb, we face corruption more effectively
Sat 31 Mar 2018/NNA - Lebanese Forces Party Chief Samir Geagea said Saturday
that his Party and its Kataeb allies "have faced corruption almost
unilaterally for years now," adding, "If citizens honor us with their votes,
we would be able to confront corruption more effectively." However, Geagea
vowed to pursue the fight against corruption with the available means, even
if the elections outcome did not turn out in their favor. Geagea's words
came during his meeting with members of the "Zahle Our Cause" electoral list
who visited him at Mehrab earlier today. "The middle Bekaa region has been
neglected for a long time and the deputies of said region in previous
mandates have tried as much as possible to improve the situation, and were
able to partially succeed," said Geagea. evertheless, he deemed that one
side alone cannot change the status quo in the absence of a healthy State.
"We are offering you a bouquet of youthful multi-specialty electoral members
from Zahle and the Bekaa, representing all villages and sects, in order to
reflect a new face to this region and try to bring about the desired
change," the LF Chief indicated, urging citizens of Zahle and the Bekaa to
vote extensively for said list.
Hariri from WestBekaa: No one will ever be able to
hijack your decision
Sat 31 Mar 2018/NNA - In a wide popular ceremony held by the Future Movement
in the Rawda region of West Bekaa on Saturday, Prime Minister Saad Hariri
announced the Movement's electoral list, "Future is for West Bekaa and
Rachaya."In his delivered speech on the occasion, Hariri said: "We decided
that the last announcement of our lists will be from the Bekaa because the
Bekaa is the best place to conclude our lists! First, we pay tribute to
Palestine on Land Day. A tribute from the Bekaa to the martyrs of Palestine
who fell in the Great March of Return in Gaza, and to the heroes who faced
without weapons the Israeli occupation. My beloved, the people of West Bekaa
and Rashaya, you are the people of dignity in the most beautiful areas, the
most loyal area, and the richest area of Muslim-Christian coexistence. Here
the voice rises to meet the pain of the Karaoun Lake. Here the voice rises
to meet with the fatigue of the soil and vineyards, the call of farmers and
people to save the Litani River from the catastrophe of pollution. I am
aware of the suffering of farmers, and how difficult these past two years
were, and the suffering since the Syrian war closed the roads of export. I
know that you cannot tolerate another year like the ones that passed, and I
am working with IDAL and all the administrations to ease the burden.
Hopefully, wheat subsidy will continue.
Let me be clear: This talk is not to make you feel grateful to me. It is my
duty and because I depend, after God, on you and those like you in all
Lebanon. You never let me down. You never left me and each time you were
there standing like champions with Rafic Hariri, with Saad Hariri and with
the Future Movement. It is not a coincidence that I am building a house here
in the Bekaa to overlook the plain and raise the voice to reach Baalbek,
Arsal, Fakiha and North Bekaa, to reach Saadnayel, Anjar, Majdal Anjar, Kab
Elias, Bar Elias, Jdita, Chtaura, Zahle and Alinahri, and all the citizens
of the West Bekaa and to reach all Arab tribes all over the Bekaa. Your
voice will remain high, to reach the heart of Damascus, to reach Ghouta and
its people and children, to tell every person who can hear: the massacres in
Syria will not pave the way for a return to the Bekaa and to control its
decision. The decision of the Bekaa will remain in the hands of its people,
by your will, your vote and your dignity. The Bekaa is not for the followers
of the tutelage era and the era of intelligence services in Anjar. The
people of West Bekaa and Rashaya know this. We read this through the
gathering of Bashar's allies in lists, from the North to Beirut, Mount
Lebanon and the Bekaa. Such lists have a mission, which is to translate the
war in Syria in the parliamentary elections of Lebanon. I say, and the
people of West Bekaa and Rashaya say before me: No person or list will ever
be able to hijack your decision. Your word on May 6 is not only with Saad
Hariri and the Future Movement. Your word is to protect the future of your
children and to prevent handing the area over to people who applaud the
bombing, slaughtering and displacement of the Syrian people and children.
You, the people of honor, nobility and Arabism will never accept something
like this, and none of you will accept the intentional offense of Martyr
Premier Rafic Hariri. There are people who became suddenly aware of the
socio-economic situation and the importance of the economic programs. They
became aware that the world is not only weapons, armed people, wars and
military parades. They became aware that there are deprived regions and
people who need services, schools, medical care, electricity, agriculture,
employment opportunities and infrastructure. There are people who are fed up
with slogans in the name of religion and sect, awaiting relief. There are
areas asking the MPs, ministers, leaders, parties and religious men every
day: Where is the State? Bring it back to become responsible for us and the
future of our children like all the other Lebanese citizens!
Twenty five years ago, their project was to hinder the project of Rafic
Hariri. They put a spoke in the wheel and fabricated files in solidarity
with the Syrian Intelligence and their followers who are now candidates on
their lists in the Bekaa.
I, Saad Rafic Hariri, will not remain silent and will never accept
injustice.
Our history in the country and in the Bekaa is known. It is a history of
education, reconstruction, work, infrastructure, roads, hospitals,
universities, schools, bridges, and services all over Lebanon. We built,
reconstructed and restored. We only brought trust, goodness and progress to
the country. We moved Lebanon away from chaos, destruction, wars and
immigration. We ensured employment opportunities for the Lebanese. What did
they do? They only see the Hariri governments as if no one else was a Prime
Minister in Lebanon except Rafic Hariri and Saad Hariri. We decided to go
back to the time of Rafic Hariri. We decided that the Lebanese people should
take a breath and reach safety. We decided not to hand over our destiny once
again to the tutelage, and to work day and night to protect the country,
invest in the new generation, invest in security and economy and face the
burdens of the Syrian displacement. The Rafic Hariri era removed Lebanon and
the state from destruction and placed it once again on the world map. We
will pursue the path of Rafic Hariri.
Some want to escalate their speeches before the elections. Let things be
clear: Our decision to calm things down does not mean to remain silent
towards any attack against our people, leaders, martyrs and political
movement. Our decision to protect stability does not mean to give up our
constants, from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to the monopoly of weapons,
the refusal of any intervention in the Syrian war and others. This is our
decision and it will never change! This is the decision of your list that we
came here to announce: the list of "the Future is for West Bekaa and
Rashaya."Before announcing the list, a special tribute is due to Minister
Jamal Jarrah who served this area in parliament and cabinet in the best
possible way. Hopefully he will continue serving it with us and beside you
and all of us. Also a tribute is due to MP Antoine Saad and through him to
our allies in the Progressive Socialist Party. And a tribute also to MP
Robert Ghanem, the legislator who will be missed by the new Parliament. Last
but not least I want to wish a blessed Easter to all the western Christian
sects in the Bekaa and all over Lebanon. The people of Bekaa are the people
of decency, the people of pride and dignity. Your destiny is to carry the
responsibility of the nation. You faced tutelage and rose up after the
assassination of Martyr Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. Today the tutelage is
returning to tell you: I want your vote for a person on the list of
Hezbollah in West Bekaa and Rashaya. Already Hezbollah is saying that it has
an MP in West Bekaa. One and not two. I am sure you are wondering why only
one seat on that list? Probably they did not find another one. This is the
will of the tutelage, the will of those who told Rafic Hariri: You can
either travel, go to prison or go to the grave! On May 6, you will express
your will with your votes in the ballot boxes. On May 6, you will respond
intensely and show the whole nation who is Rafic Hariri and who is the blue
giant in the Bekaa. On May 6, your date is with your list, the blue list,
the list of "the Future is for West Bakaa and Rashaya". PM Hariri concluded
his speech by announcing the members of the electoral list: Ziad Kadri, Wael
Abu Faour, Amin Wehbe, Henri Chdid, Ghassan Skaff and Mohammed Karawi.
Hariri: We seek to consolidate stability and soon to
lift off the Gulf countries' travel ban to Lebanon
Sat 31 Mar 2018/NNA - Prime Minister Saad Hariri disclosed Saturday that
efforts are focused on consolidating stability in the country, and working
to soon raise the travel ban by Gulf countries to Lebanon. "The government
is exerting all possible efforts to stabilize the country, and to provide
the appropriate environment for the return of tourists to Beirut and all of
Lebanon," Hariri reassured. "You will soon see that a number of Gulf
countries will lift the travel ban on its citizens to Lebanon, which will
contribute to the promotion of tourism in our country and thus strengthen
the economy as a whole," he added. Hariri's words came during a talk held
this afternoon with a group of women leaders and workers in various
economic, social and media fields, at the invitation of the Lebanese Council
of Women Leaders at the Sea Side Pavilion Center. Focusing on the role of
women as partners in crossing over to the "State of Institutions," the Prime
Minister addressed the general political situation in the country and
various demands related to political, economic, social and environmental
issues, alongside the combating of corruption. "Women are not the society's
half, but are the ones who build the whole society," said Hariri, vowing
that "there will be a quota for women in the next government and in the next
parliament." "Women are an integral part of political and social work and
have great achievements in Lebanon," the Prime Minister went on. "We need to
do a lot to develop the role of women and to engage them in the political
sphere," he added. "In this government, we have established the first
ministry for women's affairs, and we have to develop this effort to devote a
quota to women, both in the government and in the parliament," Hariri
underscored.

which was attended by delegations, religious clerics and nuns from the Metn

9 Competing Lists in Beirut 2 Threaten Hariri’s Ticket
Beirut - Youssef Diab/Asharq
Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March, 2018/The Mustaqbal Movement is facing a tough
battle in the second electoral district of Beirut, where the dispersion of
Sunni votes could threaten its candidates who are facing eight other lists
competing in the May 6 parliamentary elections. The results of the polls in
this district are expected to reveal whether Beirut is loyal to the choices
of Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who is heading the list. They will also show
the Prime Minister’s ability to limit the options of his rivals, who rushed
to form several lists with hopes to strike his chances to win the race.
Those contenders are raising slogans accusing Hariri of “offering additional
political concessions that serve the Hezbollah project and the axis of
resistance.” Despite tilting the balance in favor of Hariri’s list, which is
expected to win more than half of the seats, the leadership of the Mustaqbal
Movement spoke about the presence of a rival list, supported by the Shi’ite
duo, Hezbollah and Amal, which could win two or three seats in the second
district of Beirut. Sources from the Movement said that the other competing
lists aim to weaken the popularity of Hariri and show that Sunnis have
become less supportive to the Premier. Separately, Saudi Chargé d'Affaires
to Lebanon Walid al-Bukhari and United Arab Emirates Ambassador Hamad
Chamessi attended Friday prayers at the Great Umayyad Mosque of Baalbek,
following an invitation from Mufti of Baalbek-Hermel Sheikh Khaled Solh. In
his religious sermon, Sheikh Solh stressed "the importance of honesty and
staying away from lies and rumors." He condemned the "missiles targeting the
land of the two Holy Mosques" and praised "the efforts of the Kingdom of
Good and the State of UAE."After prayers, both diplomats met with Sheikh
Solh in the presence of a number of Muslim clerics and Future Movement's
electoral candidate in Baalbek-Hermel district, Hussein Solh, Lebanon’s
National News Agency said.

by LibanPost in Honor of Elie Saab
Beirut- Viviane Haddad/Asharq
Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March, 2018/In the latest LibanPost series of honorary
stamps, a special stamp was issued in honor of Lebanese international
fashion designer Elie Saab, under the name of “Elie Saab - Le Timbre.” The
launching event was held at Beit Beirut in Sodeco area, in the presence of a
number of Lebanese dignitaries, including Prime Minister Saad Hariri, and
was inaugurated by Mazen Hayek (Spokesman for MBC Media Group), who
underlined Saab’s journey and achievements at the local and international
levels.
The walls of Beit Beirut were covered with
giant photos of Saab’s designs of wedding and celebrity dresses, worn by
prominent international figures, especially those of famous Hollywood stars
on the red carpet at the Oscars and other international festivals. Following
a ceremony, during which Hariri awarded Saab an honorary shield, the curtain
was lifted on the postage stamp bearing an image of Elie Saab, which he had
chosen himself. Hariri delivered a speech in which he underlined that
Lebanon was proud of the renowned designer, describing him as an example to
the Lebanese youth. Khalil Daoud, General Manager of LibanPost, emphasized
the talent, passion, vision, continuous work, boldness, ambition and
determination of Saab since he was 18 years old. He said the international
designer’s journey was marked by endless success and that Beirut and Lebanon
were always in his heart. Saab expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome
and appreciation, considering the event as a tribute to all Lebanese
creators in Lebanon and the world, who reflect the positive image of the
country.
Bejjani Says It's Time
to Inject New Pulse in Lebanon
Kataeb's candidate in Aley, Theodora Bejjani, on Saturday said that it is
time to inject a new pulse that would bring change for Lebanon, stressing
that it is also time to build a country that meets the aspirations of its
people. "We have the right to live in a state where our basic needs are
secured," she said in a ceremony to unveil the line-up of the Free Decision
list that will be running for parliamentary seats in the Chouf-Aley
district. "Many people asked us why we didn't lose hope yet. The answer is
because we believe that it's our right to live in a state that is capable of
handling decisive decisions, and where there is no place for favoritism,
corruption and partitioning," she stressed. "We chose to run for the polls
because we got fed up with unkept promises and got tired seeing our youths
waiting for visas to leave this country. We got tired of being taken
hostages by the leaders."
The Free Decision list includes the following candidates: - Chouf: Mazen
Chebbo, Raafat Chaaban, Kamil Chamoun, Joseph Eid, Daad Azzi, Ghassan
Moughabgheb, Samy Hamadeh and Alhan Farhat
- Aley: Samy Al-Ramah, Theodora Bejjani and Antoine Bou Melhem
Bou Khaled: Baabda and Whole of Lebanon Need a New Pulse
Kataeb.org/Saturday 31st March 2018/Kataeb's candidate for the Maronite seat
in Baabda, Ramzi Khaled, on Saturday said that the district, as well as the
whole country, needs a new and competent pulse, pledging to be a competent
and honorable lawmaker whose only goal would be to serve the best interest
of Lebanon. Speaking during the announcement of the "Together for Baabda"
list, Bou Khaled vowed to work on fulfilling the aspirations of the
Lebanese, notably the people of Baabda, who want to live in a free and
independent country where intellectual, cultural and religious freedom is
preserved.
"We all dream of a country where each citizen would feel important [...]; a
country whose youths had sacrificed their lives so that the local
communities would stay in harmony, without each of them worrying about its
future."The Baabda candidate also stressed the need to build a country where
there are no "non-state security parameters" and where the roads are not
blocked each time the top officials are at odds, only to see them allying
with each other a few months later. "We dream of a country where the
Lebanese military is the sole armed force in charge of defending and
protecting the country's territory; a country whose people deserve not to
pay the price for the adventures taken by an armed faction which has been
hijacking the state's war and peace decision-making power," he stressed. The
"Together for Baabda" list includes the following candidates: Ramzi Bou
Khaled (Maronite seat), Elie Gharios (Maronite seat), Paul Abi Rached (Maronite
seat), Said Alameh (Shiite seat), Olfat Sabeh (Shiite seat) and Ajwad Ayyash
(Druze seat).
Doueihy: Lebanon Heading for Bankruptcy Amid Absence of
Economic Plan
Kataeb.org/Saturday 31st March 2018/Kataeb's candidate for the Maronite seat
in Zgharta, Michel Doueihy, warned that Lebanon is heading for bankruptcy
should no economic plan be devised, hoping that officials would realize the
risks that the country is subject to. In an interview on Voice of Lebanon
radio station, Doueihy said that the ruling authority is economically
subduing the Lebanese in a bid to blackmail them ahead of the elections,
blasting the use of state institutions as a campaign platform to garner
votes. "If elected, I will work on implementing the Kataeb's 131-point
platform, and focus on adopting administrative decentralization as well as
creating job opportunities in Zgharta.""It is up to you to turn May 6 into a
day of change, or else we will all regret it later," Doueihy said in an
address to the voters. "I ask you to vote to any candidate who brings change
for the country."

Security Council
Fails to Agree on Gaza Joint Statement
Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March,
2018/The UN Security Council heard fears of a further escalation in
Israeli-Palestinian violence in the Gaza Strip during emergency talks Friday
despite a failure to agree a joint statement on clashes that have left at
least 16 people dead. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an
"independent and transparent investigation" and reaffirmed "the readiness"
of the world body to revitalize peace efforts, a spokesperson said.
"He also appeals to those concerned to refrain from any act that
could lead to further casualties and in particular any measures that could
place civilians in harm's way," UN spokesman Farhan Haq said. Kuwait
requested the meeting to discuss the unraveling situation in Gaza, where
Palestinians said Israeli fire killed 16 people in the conflict's deadliest
single day since the 2014 Gaza war. "There is fear that the situation might
deteriorate in the coming days," said assistant UN secretary general for
political affairs, Taye-Brook Zerihoun, urging maximum restraint. "Israel
must uphold its responsibilities under international human rights and
humanitarian law. Lethal force should only be used as a last resort with any
resulting fatalities properly investigated by the authorities," Zerihoun
said. Britain and the United States expressed regret
that the timing of the meeting -- the first night of Passover -- meant
Israeli officials could not attend. Leading ambassadors sent deputies in
their place.
"It's vital that this Council be balanced
in its approach," a US diplomat told the meeting. "We should have found an
arrangement for all parties to participate tonight," he added. "We are
deeply saddened by the loss of life today," the diplomat added.
"The risk of escalation is very real," the
French representative said. "There is the possibility of a new conflict in
the Gaza Strip." In a written statement before the meeting, Israel's
ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, blamed Hamas for the
violence. The violence broke out as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near
the Israeli border to demand the right of return for Palestinian refugees
who fled or were expelled since the creation of Israel. Israeli troops used
tear gas and live fire to force back Palestinians who approached the heavily
fortified border fence.
Israeli tank fire and an air strike also
targeted three Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip after what the military said
was an attempted shooting attack against soldiers along the border that
caused no injuries. The health ministry in Gaza said 16 Palestinians were
killed by Israeli forces and more than 1,400 were injured, including 758 by
live fire, with the remainder hurt by rubber bullets and tear gas.
U.N. Chief Calls for Independent Probe into Gaza Deaths
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday called for an "independent
and transparent investigation" after 16 Palestinians were killed and
hundreds more wounded during clashes with the Israeli military, a spokesman
said. His call came as the U.N. Security Council heard fears of a further
escalation in Israeli-Palestinian violence in the Gaza Strip during
emergency talks. "The Secretary-General calls for an independent and
transparent investigation into these incidents," said a statement by
Guterres' deputy spokesman Farhan Haq, which also reaffirmed "the readiness"
of the world body to revitalize peace efforts.
Haq added that Guterres "also appeals to those concerned to refrain from any
act that could lead to further casualties and in particular any measures
that could place civilians in harm's way."Kuwait requested an emergency
meeting to discuss the unraveling situation in Gaza, which saw the
conflict's deadliest single day since the 2014 Gaza war. "There is fear that
the situation might deteriorate in the coming days," said assistant U.N.
secretary general for political affairs, Taye-Brook Zerihoun, urging maximum
restraint. Britain and the United States expressed regret that the timing of
the meeting -- the first night of Passover -- meant Israeli officials could

that this Council be balanced in its approach," a U.S. diplomat told the
meeting. "We should have found an arrangement for all parties to participate
tonight," he added. "We are deeply saddened by the loss of life today," the
diplomat added. "Bad actors who use protests as a cover to incite violence
endanger innocent lives."
'Possibility of new conflict
"The risk of escalation is very real," the French representative said.
"There is the possibility of a new conflict in the Gaza Strip."In a written
statement before the meeting, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations,
Danny Danon, blamed Hamas for the violence. "While Jews around the world
gathered with their family at the Seder table to celebrate the Passover
holiday, the Palestinians sunk to a new deceitful low so that they could use
the U.N. to spread lies about Israel," Danon later said. The violence broke
out as tens of thousands of Gazans marched near the Israeli border to demand
the right of return for Palestinian refugees who fled or were expelled since
the creation of Israel. Israeli troops used tear gas and live fire to force
back Palestinians who approached the heavily fortified border fence. Israeli

Gaza said 16 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces and more than 1,400
were injured, including 758 by live fire, with the remainder hurt by rubber
bullets and tear gas. Palestinians accused Israel of using disproportionate
force. The Israeli military said the protests were used as cover by
militants to either break through the border or carry out attacks.
Bashar is Staying', Says Bin Salman
Naharnet/ Agence France Presse/March 31/18/Naharnet/March 31/18/Saudi Crown
Prince Mohammed bin Salman has said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is
not likely to be ousted from power. In an interview with TIME magazine
published overnight, the powerful Saudi prince said he hopes that Assad will
not become a “puppet” for Tehran. “Bashar is staying,” he said. “But I
believe that Bashar’s interests is not to let the Iranians do whatever they
want they want to do.”Separately, MBS said that he wants the U.S. military
to maintain a presence in Syria, despite President Donald Trump’s
declaration that American forces will be pulled from the war-torn country in
the near future. “We believe American troops should stay for at least the
mid-term, if not the long-term,” the young Saudi leader said. Bin Salman,
who is midway through a multi-city tour in the United States, said the
American troop presence inside Syria is the last effort stopping Iran, Saudi
Arabia’s arch-enemy, from continuing to expand influence with regional
allies. U.S. forces inside the country also allow Washington to have a say
in Syria’s future, he said. Bin Salman warned that Iran, through proxy
militias and regional allies, will establish a. overland supply route that
leads from Beirut through Syria and Iraq to Tehran. The so-called “Shiite
Crescent” would give Iran a greater foothold in a tumultuous region through
a string of allies. The U.S. maintains a remote base at Deir Ezzor in
eastern Syria, in the middle of that corridor. It’s there that Special
Operations forces coordinate with Syrian opposition fighters to wipe out the
remaining Islamic State fighters holed up in a series of towns along the
Euphrates River and a stretch of desert straddling the Iraq-Syria border.
“If you take those troops out from east Syria, you will lose that
checkpoint,” bin Salman said. “And this corridor could create a lot of
things in the region.”The Saudi leader made his remarks on Syria just hours
after Trump told a cheering crowd in Richfield, Ohio that U.S. troops will
soon be pulled out. “By the way, we’re knocking the hell out of ISIS,” Trump
said, referring to the Islamic State group. “We’re coming out of Syria very
soon. Let the other people take care of it now, very soon. Very soon, we’re
coming out.”Trump’s comments were a departure from the previously stated
positions of senior Pentagon and State Department officials, who have said
the U.S. will keep troops inside the country to stamp out the last remaining
fighters and prevent a new group from forming. An American service member
was killed in Syria Thursday by an improvised explosive device, U.S.
officials said Friday. A total of 14 U.S. troops have been killed fighting
IS in Iraq and Syria since the operation began nearly four years ago. There
are currently about 2,000 U.S. troops working with Syrian Democratic Forces
to re-capture territory from IS.
Report: Trump Freezes Syria Recovery Funds
Naharnet/ Agence France Presse/March 31/18/The White House has instructed
the State Department to freeze over $200 million in funds earmarked for
"recovery efforts" in Syria, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The
report -- which came a day after Trump declared in a speech that the U.S.
would be quitting Syria "very soon" -- is another indication the president
wants to disengage from the country. Officials told AFP that Trump's aside
in his speech was not a slip, but that for several weeks he had been pushing
back against the idea of a long or medium term U.S. commitment to
stabilizing eastern Syria.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump called for the spending freeze
after reading a news report that said the U.S. had committed the funds for
recovery efforts in Syria, which has been wracked by a more than seven-year
civil war. The U.S. has more than 2,000 military personnel in eastern Syria
as part of international efforts to defeat the Islamic State group, an
extremist organization that once controlled swathes of Syria and neighboring
Iraq. Speaking in Ohio on Thursday, Trump indicated that with the war
against IS winding down, he wants American involvement in Syria to do
likewise.
"We'll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon. Let the other people take
care of it now," he promised. Trump did not say who the others were who
might take care of Syria, but Russia and Iran have sizable forces in the
country to support President Bashar al-Assad's regime. His eagerness to quit
the conflict flies in the face of a new U.S. Syria strategy announced in
January by then secretary of state Rex Tillerson -- who has since been
sacked. Tillerson argued that U.S. forces must remain engaged in Syria to
prevent IS and al-Qaida from returning and to deny Iran a chance "to further
strengthen its position in Syria." In a speech at Stanford University, he
also warned that "a total withdrawal of American personnel at this time
would restore Assad and continue his brutal treatment against his own
people." But Tillerson has gone after being dismissed in a tweet. And Trump,
who increasingly makes foreign policy announcements without seeking the
advice of U.S. generals or diplomats, wants out. "We spent $7 trillion in
the Middle East. And you know what we have for it? Nothing," Trump declared,
promising to focus future U.S. spending on building jobs and infrastructure
at home.
U.N. Blacklists Dozens of Ships, Businesses over N.
Korea Smuggling
Naharnet/ Agence France Presse/March 31/18/The U.N. Security Council has
blacklisted 27 ships, 21 companies and a businessman for helping North Korea
circumvent sanctions, as the United States keeps up pressure on Pyongyang
despite its recent overtures toward talks, diplomats said.
Acting on a request from the United States, it was the largest-ever package
of sanctions designations on North Korea approved by a council committee,
diplomats said. The move is part of a global crackdown on the smuggling of
North Korean commodities in violation of U.N. sanctions resolutions, which
were adopted in response to Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
The sanctions were approved as the United States moves to open talks with
North Korea on its nuclear drive, with a summit possible between President
Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un by the end of May. Despite the diplomatic
opening, the United States has made clear they will keep the pressure on
Pyongyang to shift course by pressing on with sanctions. Trump's ambassador
to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, on Friday welcomed the "historic"
sanctions package," calling it "a clear sign that the international
community is united in our efforts to keep up maximum pressure on the North
Korean regime.""We want to thank the members of the Security Council, as
well as Japan and South Korea, for working with us to keep up the pressure
and for their commitment to implementing U.N. Security Council resolutions
and holding violators accountable," Haley added. A total of 13 North Korean
oil tankers and cargo vessels were banned from ports worldwide along with 12
other ships for helping Pyongyang smuggle banned commodities or supplying
oil and fuel shipments, according to a U.N. document obtained by AFP.
Two other North Korean vessels were hit with a global assets freeze, but are
not banned from port entry. Twenty-one shipping and trading firms were hit
by an assets freeze. Three of them are based in Hong Kong including Huaxin
Shipping, which delivered shipments of North Korean coal to Vietnam in
October.
North Korea flouts sanctions Twelve North Korean firms were
blacklisted for running ships involved in illegal transfers of oil and fuel,
according to the document. Two other companies -- Shanghai Dongfeng Shipping
and Weihai World Shipping Freight, also based in China -- were blacklisted
for carrying North Korean coal on their vessels. The remaining firms are in
based Singapore, Samoa, the Marshall Islands and Panama. A businessman
identified as Tsang Yung Yuan was hit by a global travel ban and assets
freeze for organizing illegal shipments of North Korean coal with a North
Korean broker in Russia. Last year, the Security Council adopted a series of
resolutions to ban North Korean exports of commodities in a bid to cut off
revenue to the nuclear-armed state's military programs. The measures
severely restrict deliveries of oil and refined petroleum products to North
Korea, but sanctions monitors have reported that Pyongyang has used vessels
to dodge those restrictions. North Korea earned $200 million in revenue last
year from exports of coal, iron, steel and other banned commodities,
according to a recent report. Only eight North Korean vessels had so far
been banned from ports for sanctions-busting -- so the inclusion of 13 other
ships on Friday was expected to significantly cripple North Korea's maritime
network. The United States had initially asked the United Nations to ban 33
ships and 27 firms over smuggling, but China put a hold on that request to
review the list.
Earlier this month, the White House said Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping
agreed in a phone conversation to keep up the sanctions pressure on North
Korea until Pyongyang takes concrete steps toward denuclearization.
Saudi Air Defenses
Intercept Houthi Missile over Najran
Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March,
2018/The Arab Coalition spokesman, Turki al-Maliki, said Saturday that Saudi
air defense forces have intercepted a missile fired by Houthi insurgents
from Yemen at the southern Saudi city of Najran. According to preliminary
information, an Indian resident was lightly wounded by falling debris after
the missile was intercepted, Maliki said in a statement on the official
Saudi Press Agency. He accused Iran of arming the Houthis “in clear and
explicit violation” of UN Security Council resolutions 2216 and 2231. Maliki also said that Tehran is seeking to
destabilize Saudi Arabia and threaten the security of the region and the
world. Firing ballistic missiles on cities and residential areas is contrary
to international humanitarian law, he said. The actions of Houthi militias
are a dangerous escalation in the war of terrorist organizations and state
sponsors of terrorism such as the Iranian regime, Maliki added. The
coalition on Thursday said it intercepted another missile fired by the
Houthis at the southern city of Jazan

Saudi Crown Prince
says American troops should remain inside Syria
Staff writer, Al Arabiya English/Saturday,
31 March 2018/Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman wants the US military
to maintain a presence in Syria, he told TIME on Thursday during his
multi-city tour of the United States. “We believe American troops should
stay for at least the mid-term, if not the long-term,” he said. Prince
Mohammed said the US military presence is the last effort stopping Iran from
continuing to expand influence with regional allies. The presence of the
troops, which have a remote base at Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, will also
allow Washington to have a say in Syria’s future, the crown prince said. “If
you take those troops out from east Syria, you will lose that checkpoint,”
Prince Mohammed said. “And this corridor could create a lot of things in the
region.”There are currently about 2,000 US troops working with Syrian
Democratic Forces to re-capture territory from ISIS. The crown prince’s
remarks came just hours after Trump told a cheering crowd in Ohio that US
troops will soon be pulled out. “By the way, we’re knocking the hell out of
ISIS,” Trump said. “We’re coming out of Syria very soon. Let the other
people take care of it now, very soon. Very soon, we’re coming out.”During
the interview, the crown prince also said he believes that Syrian President
Bashar al-Assad is not likely to be ousted from power. He said he hopes that
Assad will not become a “puppet” for Tehran. “Bashar is staying … But I
believe that Bashar’s interests is not to let the Iranians do whatever they
want they want to do.”

Patronizes Deal on Localization of Military Manufacturing
Asharq Al-Awsat/Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday,
31 March, 2018 /Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has patronized a
signing ceremony for the establishment of a joint project aimed at
localizing more than 55 percent of Saudi Arabia’s fixed-wing aircraft and
helicopter maintenance, repairs and rehabilitation. The agreement, which was
signed in Seattle on Friday, also includes maintenance to weapon
technologies and spare parts for the purpose of achieving the goals of Saudi
Vision 2030, which states that 50 percent of Saudi Arabia’s military
spending will be localized. The deal was signed by Ahmed Al-Khateeb,
chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Military Industries Company
(SAMI), and Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing CEO and chairman of board of
directors. The Crown Prince was also briefed on the activities of Boeing
Aircraft Industries. During his tour of the company, he was accompanied by
Saudi Ambassador to the US Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, and
members of the official delegation accompanying the Crown Prince.
British Concern
over Iran’s Destabilizing Activities
London - Camille Taweel/Asharq
Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March, 2018 /A spokesman for the British Foreign
Ministry said his country underlined the importance of maintaining the
nuclear deal with Tehran to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed
state, but rejects its destabilizing activities in the region, particularly
in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. The spokesman stated that the United Kingdom's
stance regarding the Iranian nuclear deal is clear. It is an important
agreement that makes the world a safer place by neutralizing the threat
posed by a nuclear-armed Iran, the spokesman told Asharq Al-Awsat, noting
that the JPOA was being implemented, as expressed by successive reports of
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Asked if the agreement would
remain in force if US President Donald Trump executed his threat to withdraw
from it by May 12, the British official said consultations were underway
with all partners, following Trump’s speech on Jan. 12, stressing efforts to
maintain the success of the JPOA. The spokesman underlined, on the other
hand, that Britain’s adherence to the nuclear agreement was not at the
expense of ignoring Iran’s actions that he described as “destabilizing” in
the region, from Iraq to Syria all the way to Yemen. He noted in this
regard that Britain had clearly expressed its deep concern over Iran’s
threatening behavior in the region, including the proliferation of ballistic
missiles. “We have conveyed this concern to the Iranian government at the
highest levels, including during the visit of Foreign Minister Boris Johnson
to Tehran in December, and to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi
when he was here in London in February, and during the European
quadripartite meeting (Britain, Germany, France and Italy) with Iran in
Munich also in February,” the spokesman said. He also said that Britain
strongly condemned Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia in July, November,
December and lately on March 26.
Kurdish Officials'
Visit to Elysee Triggers French-Turkish Crisis
Ankara, Paris- Said Abdul Razek and Michel
Abu Najm/Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday, 31 March, 2018 /Paris was quick on Friday
to reassure Ankara after President Emmanuel Macron was misquoted as saying
that his country would deploy forces in the northern Syrian city of Manbij.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan quickly responded to the French
statements, saying that Manbij would be the next target of his forces to
liberate the city from Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG).Ankara also
rejected any French mediation between Turkey and the Syrian Democratic
Forces, led by the YPG, which are considered by Turkey as terrorists. On
Thursday, an SDF delegation including Kurdish officials visited the Elysee
Palace in Paris. Macron told the delegation he hoped to build dialogue
between the Democratic Forces and Turkey, with the help of France and the
international community, according to a communiqué from the Elysee. However,
Turkey completely dismissed the suggestion, as Erdogan said: "We have no
need for mediation... We are extremely saddened by France's... wrong stance
on this." “Those who go to bed with terrorists, or even host them in their
palaces, will sooner or later understand the mistake they're making,”
Erdogan said in Ankara. He also warned that Ankara did not need a mediator.
"Who are you to mediate between Turkey and a terror group?" Erdogan said at
a meeting of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party in the capital,
Ankara. According to the Elysee, Macron reaffirmed the priority of the
battle against “the terrorist threat” and assured France's support to the
SDF, particularly in stabilizing the security zone in northeast Syria “to
prevent the resurgence of ISIS while awaiting a political solution to the
Syrian conflict.”The French show of support to Kurds is not new. Macron was
the first Western leader to warn against the possibility of the Turkish
operation in Afrin turning into an “invasion of Syrian territories.”
Turkey's
Threats to Intervene in Iraq's Sinjar Raise Concerns
Baghdad- Hamza Mustafa/Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday,
31 March, 2018/Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's repeated threats to
storm Iraq's Sinjar region, triggered fear and concern among its population
as Yazidi MP Vian Dakhil drew a grim picture of the situation there at all
levels. Erdogan renewed his country’s openness to working with the Iraqi
government for the sake of ending activities of the Kurdistan Workers' Party
(PKK). In his speech at the headquarters of Justice and Development Party in
Ankara, Erdogan said that Turkey considers Sinjar similar to Qandil- a PKK
stronghold- and they can go there anytime they wish. Iraqi deputy Hakim al-Zamili
told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that Erdogan's repetitive statements about
entering Sinjar aim to test out Baghdad’s seriousness in tackling this
issue. Zamili stated that Baghdad and Ankara spoke during the past days
about a joint coordination on PKK in Sinjar. “Official phone-calls followed
between the two parties, which give the impression of good coordination
between the two parties,” he said. Erdogan mentioned earlier that his forces
conducted a military operation in Sinjar, said Zamili, adding that it is
less likely for a single Turkish military operation to take place in Sinjar
without coordination with Baghdad. Meanwhile, Nineveh Provincial Council
warned from possible administrative and security chaos in Sinjar due to the
presence of various factions and forces. Dakhil said that the problem lies
in Iraq's feeble reaction to Erdogan's threats that might encourage the
Turkish president to enter Sinjar, warning from a new Efrin.
Unemployed Russian
Citizens Victims of Fancy Car, Cash Robberies
Moscow- Taha Abdul Wahed/Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday,
31 March, 2018 /Russia has recently seen many bizarre robberies. Usually,
thieves target wealthy people, business owners, and high-income earners,
with whom they can find huge sums or expensive items. Yet, although it will
always be a crime, stealing a million dollar from the apartment of an
unemployed citizen is strange. From a series of strange robberies, the
Russian Interior Ministry disclosed a report submitted by a resident living
in Moscow, saying thieves stole his fancy Lexus. After examining the robbery
site, police said that unknown men had stolen a Lexus LX570 from an
unguarded parking. They pointed out that the car owner, who submitted the
report, is an "unemployed" citizen, and estimated his material losses at 6.5
million Russian rubles, more than $ 100,000. It is known that this luxury
car is the favorite choice among wealthy Russian millionaires, politicians,
and other powerful people, who often use all security means to protect it
from theft. It seems, however, that the "unemployed" citizen thought that
the thieves would not approach his car, fearing that it would belong to an
important figure, so he left it unguarded, and lost it. Another unemployed
resident from Moscow had also been a victim of a bizarre robbery. This man
had kept large sums of cash in his apartment in north-east Moscow. According
to the official report, an unknown man broke into his apartment and stole 12
million rubles (about $250,000 dollar), 350,000 dollars, and 250,000 euro.
Another “unemployed" resident from Moscow also lost his "Gelandewagen",
Mercedes-Benz, estimated at about $ 100,000 in a similar robbery that took
place late 2017. Surprisingly, in all these robberies, no one knew the
sources of those "unemployed" Russians’ wealth, in a country where many
working people are usually forced to economize their income, so it suffices
them till the end of the month.
Results of
Egyptian Presidential Elections Not Contested
Cairo - Waleed Abdul Rahman/Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday,
31 March, 2018 /Egypt’s National Election Authority (NEA)
is scheduled to announce next Monday the results of the presidential
elections pitting President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi and Mousa Mostafa Mousa. On
Friday evening, the deadline for contesting the results of the elections
ended in the absence of any petition. Mahmoud Helmy el-Sherif, deputy
chairman of the National Election Authority and its spokesman, said that the
committee did not receive any petition to contest the results of the pollds,
adding that the final result will be announced on April 2. According to
preliminary counts, Sisi has won a second term with more than 92 percent of
the overall votes. Abdoulaye Diop, head of the African Union Election
Observation Mission deployed to monitor the elections, said voters cast
their ballots in a very peaceful and organized environment, describing the
widespread deployment of security forces around polling stations as
“reassuring.” Diop also noted the high turnout of women, who represented the
highest number of voters during the three-day election. “The mission did not
spot any fraud at any of the polling stations it visited during the
elections,” he said during a press conference held in Cairo on Friday. The
African Union observation team consists of around 40 observers covering 12
governorates. The NEA has approved dozens of NGOs to observe and monitor the
elections, including the National Council of Human Rights, the National
Women’s Council and the African Union. After the announcement of the
official results, and in accordance with the 2014 Constitution, Egypt's
elected president should be sworn in by the parliament to officially start a
four-year term in office. The elected President would take the following
oath before the People's Assembly: "I swear by Almighty God to uphold the
Republican system with loyalty, to respect the Constitution and the law, and
to look after the interests of the people fully and to safeguard the
independence and territorial integrity of the motherland.”
Protests in
Tripoli to Demand End of Transitional Phase
Cairo - Jamal Jawhar/Asharq Al-Awsat/Saturday,
31 March, 2018 /Libyan demonstrators protested in Tripoli’s Martyrs Square
on Friday, demanding the unity of state institutions and the termination of
the transitional phase by holding a referendum before elections. The protest
was organized by a group of young Libyans under the title “March 30
Movement.” Hundreds began appearing in the square on Thursday evening to
take part in Friday's protests. As protest calls for the sake of changing
the “political map” circulated on social networks, the official page of
Al-Jazeera urged Libyans to demonstrate in the square. On its Facebook page,
the movement announced that it received security approval from the Security
Directorate in Tripoli to protest peacefully in the square based on agreed
demands and objectives. “It is time to resort to the streets and unite
through peaceful protest, to demand our rights and put an end to our
suffering,” said the movement. The protest, which coincided with the second
anniversary of Chairman of the Presidential Council Fayez Sarraj’s entrance
to Tripoli in line with the Skhirat Agreement, was preceded by several
arrangements including preparing unified posters in the square and
distributing white caps to the protesters. Local media reports said that
some figures close to the Islamic movement in Libya are promoting for the
movement for the sake of changing the country’s “political map.”Libyan
journalist Hussein Masouri stated to Asharq Al-Awsat that the movement’s
demands represent the majority of Libyans except for the referendum on the
constitution. UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame is seeking to organize
elections in Libya by September. In his latest remarks to the Security
Council, he said efforts are underway to hold just and free elections by the
end of the year.

Who benefits from calls for withdrawal of foreign troops
from Iraq?
Adnan Hussein/Al Arabiya/March 31/18
As the countdown to parliamentary elections in May begins, some Iraqi
politicians are calling for the withdrawal of foreign forces (mainly US troops)
from the country on the pretext that there is no need for them.
However, is there actually no need for these forces? We had witnessed a similar
situation in 2011, when politicians raised the slogan of restoring state
sovereignty and did not calm down until foreign troops (which were also mostly
American) were withdrawn while Iraq was still facing a vicious war against
Al-Qaeda.
Advocates of withdrawal
At that time, the advocates of withdrawing foreign troops achieved their aim,
but the move only helped Al-Qaeda which continued to strike wherever it wanted
until things got worse when ISIS occupied one third of the country’s territory.
There were plenty of atrocities committed against six million Iraqis, almost
half of whom are still living in camps for the internally displaced, while tens
of thousands were killed, wounded or held hostage. The advocates of sovereignty
regained it for a while from the Americans, but then they handed it over to
Al-Qaeda and then to its heir ISIS on a silver platter. If this renewed call for
withdrawal of foreign troops is implemented, it would come as a free gift for
ISIS, which has recently started to reassert itself in several locations and
districts it has occupied since 2014.
ISIS’ resumption of its terrorist activities synchronized with Turkey’s military
operations in Iraq and which will not end with expelling or eliminating
Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters
Acting upon Iraqi interests
In fact, ISIS’ resumption of its terrorist activities synchronized with Turkey’s
military operations in Iraq and which will not end with expelling or eliminating
Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters. Experience has shown that Turkish
troops rarely leave an area they occupy, Cyprus and Syria being a clear proof of
this fact. The military posts established by Turkey in Iraqi Kurdistan in the
1980s, in agreement with Saddam’s regime, are still extant and have in fact been
reinforced with more troops and equipment.
Iran does not like to leave one soldier in Iraq. This is part of its own
interests. But Iraqi interest lies in not repeating the mistake of 2011. The
withdrawal of international forces, especially US troops, would not just benefit
Iran, but it would also benefit ISIS and Turkey.
The right course of action would be to leave the issue and fate of foreign
forces to the Iraqi government, as it is the right authority that can decide if
there is or is not any need for foreign forces.
The fatwa is not new, but the climate is
Mashari Althaydi/Al Arabiya/March 31/18
These days one often hears the argument: Where were these tolerant religious
views and flexible doctrinal interpretations hidden earlier? Why have they come
out in the open all at once? The implicit and at times explicit inference in
these remarks is that moderate religious views that are becoming popular these
days are part of a major conspiracy against Islam! For example, there is
controversy and debate over details regarding women, the arts and entertainment
and the relationship of Muslims with those belonging to a different religion,
sect or doctrinal denomination. Those who are raising fingers of accusation
against moderate religious teachings have not immersed themselves in the study
of orthodox ‘fiqh’ (Islamic jurisprudence), which is replete with ‘fatwas’ and
opinions which the ignorant deem as heresy today. Those raising fingers of
accusation against moderate religious teachings have not immersed themselves in
the study of orthodox ‘fiqh’
In his interviews to the press, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said that
Islam is being hijacked by a faction that wants to attain power, the faction of
Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood, the Khomeini regime (the Guardianship of
the Islamic Jurist) or the Sururist Movement, a wretched branch of the Muslim
Brotherhood; but Islam is not the private property of these elements. Marking a
departure from the culture of these groups regarding women, he has stated that
the general Muslim conscience supports the ideals of decency and good manners
without discrimination of color and strictures of the Abaya or the dress worn by
Muslim women. This is absolutely true. Clothing is the manifestation of local
cultural norms and setting. Take a look at the clothes of women of Mauritania or
Sudan and compare them with the clothes of women from Chechnya, or Iranian women
or Kurdish women. All of them have distinctive features that reflect their
respective indigenous culture. The underlying idea behind all of them is the
emphasis on decency.
Thus, I would like to emphasize that there is nothing new about the moderate
religious discourse and it is not the reflection of a modern trend. The fact is
that closed mindset has been opened and a gush of fresh air has started flowing.
Qatar: Is the wheel of compromise turning?
Mohammed Al Shaikh/Al Arabiya/March 31/18
Qataris have for the first time released a terror list, which includes the names
of individuals and groups whom Doha had funded and issued passports and
documents to in order to ease their movements when they were charged with
causing mayhem in various places during the so-called Arab Spring. The list has
come as a surprise to many people, including the people of Qatar. It consists of
names and organizations that were being funded and backed by the Qatari
government. This has led the Qatari people to feel, what they had not felt
before, that the wheel of compromise and concession has started to turn, as from
relenting and conceding comes the first drop of rain and blessings.
Bid to please the US
It is most likely that Qatar’s issuance of this list is an attempt to please the
United States, since the Emir of Qatar is scheduled to visit the US in April.
The Qatari regime wanted this list to serve as a goodwill gesture as perhaps the
US would help the country come out of its suffocating isolation that has sapped
the country’s vitality all levels, especially economically over the past nine
months. During this time, the rulers of Qatar had insisted that their income
from “natural gas” was so huge that they would not feel the need to yield, and
they also promoted this via their media outlets. Qatar should start handling its
geopolitical stature wisely and abandon mad ambitions
However, it seems that Qatar’s rulers have begun to realize that the region’s
orientations have changed and that Qatar is actually confronting a strong
quartet of Arab states that have the power, influence and international sway
that make the conflict with them a losing proposition from the start. Even if
the US, on which Qatar relies heavily, wanted to dictate to the Arab quartet to
adopt a conciliatory position, it would have to come at a meaningful price, such
as the banishment of the Muslim Brotherhood and the extradition of the group’s
wanted members to Egypt. Add to the fact that all the signs point that Qatar is
involved, either directly or indirectly, in cases related to terrorism and has
protected people whom there is clear evidence that proves their involvement in
terrorist activities. This makes defending Qatar similar to defending the devil.
An example is the terrorist Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the Mufti of suicide bombers as
he is commonly known!
Don’t punch above one’s weight
In the interest of the GCC, we want Qatar to return to its senses, to tend to
its developmental projects and to give up its speculative games, which
eventually led it to miserable ends. All the signs and evidence confirm that the
only way to get out of this predicament, which Doha has put itself and its
people in, is by handling its geopolitical stature wisely and abandoning the mad
ambitions which the elder Emir, the father, once had, and which was the main
reason that made the Arab quartet sever relations with Qatar. Obstinacy and
being unrealistic is one of the most glaring flaws that led to the inglorious
end of many heads of state in history. Leading the pack was Muammar Gaddafi.
Many confirm that Gaddafi and Hamad bin Khalifa have a lot in common; chiefly
the obstinacy, the tendency to challenge reality and making dreams take control
of political conduct.
**Hamad bin Khalifa had a golden opportunity after we were tolerant with him
following his confession of conspiring against the kingdom. However, he
misunderstood this forgiveness and continued to conspire thus leading up to this
boycott that I do not think will be revoked unless Qatar agrees to make serious
concessions that will then make it much weaker than even Somalia.
Will US Bring Back Carrot And Stick Approach To Iran?
Camelia Entekhabifard/Arab News/March 2018
Not a day that goes by when, via private messages or on social media, Iranians
don’t express their anxieties and concerns over the future of the nuclear deal
and ask me if I know what President Donald Trump will do with the agreement in
mid-May. This is an important question but the answer is not easy as the
speculation is harder than ever to separate from the fact that Trump is keen not
only to fix the deal, but also to discipline the political rulers in Tehran.
To discipline, there’s a need to implement some harsh punishments, while also
offering some rewards as well. This same carrot and stick policy was pursued by
President Barack Obama as he entered into negotiations with Tehran. I remember
well the Iranian Foreign Ministry calling that carrot and stick diplomacy
offensive, and the phrase somehow has not been heard since.
But Iran has not just been fed a carrot with this nuclear deal, rather the icing
part of a carrot cake thanks to the great opportunities offered when the
country’s blocked assets were released in cash by Obama and the sanctions
related to Iran’s nuclear program were lifted. The region was thus left with an
aggressive Iranian regime, whose leadership frequently repeated it had no desire
to hold regional talks or change its attitude and behavior.
Now, with John Bolton set to become National Security Advisor and Mike Pompeo as
Secretary of State, could the US use the deal as a stick to correct the path of
Iranian aggression in the region?
The foreign ministers of the three major European countries involved in the deal
— France, Germany and the UK — on Wednesday met their EU counterparts and
proposed new sanctions over Iran’s ballistic missile program and its role in the
Syria war in order to satisfy Trump. But Spain, Italy and Austria opposed the
move and claimed that such sanctions would be ineffective in convincing Trump to
remain committed to the deal, while also hurting their relations with Iran.
This EU package sounds like it is offering carrots to Trump and the stick to the
Iranian people, who are desperately seeking changes and no longer care for the
deal itself.
The questions Iranians have been raising on social media are not about the
future of the nuclear deal, but rather the future of the world’s relations with
this regime when the basic rights of its citizens are denied and their money is
spent everywhere except on them.
The questions Iranians have been raising on social media are not about the
future of the nuclear deal, but rather the future of the world’s relations with
this regime when the basic rights of its citizens are denied and their money is
spent everywhere except on them. They have been humiliated and offended in every
possible way over the last 40 years. What is this deal good for if doesn’t serve
the Iranian people first?
Someone asked me recently if the Islamic Republic would ever give up its
presence in the region and the support it gives to Hezbollah, Hamas and the Shia
militias? Well, to my knowledge, not as long as they feel the regime change
threat is on the table. Iran’s foreign policy strategy has been built around its
regional presence and, through access to foreign-based militias, engaging in
proxy wars.
Simply put, while not impossible, it would be very hard for any agreement to
reach the goal of wrapping up the Iranian presence in the region and stopping
its support for militias in the short term.
The nuclear deal was a good start but not good enough to convince the political
leaders in Tehran that they are safe from any regime change plan. And the
world’s patience is not enough to tolerate the Islamic Revolutionary Guards
Corps for another decade.
As long as there is no common ground between the West and Iran, neither the
nuclear deal nor any other agreement could bring them together. Iran is
suspicious of the aims of the Western nations, especially the US, and this trust
will never be built if Washington and Tehran don’t deal with each other
directly.
For the Iranians, the nuclear deal was not only meant to improve the economy,
but also the country’s relations with the West, so that Iran could gain the same
prestige and value it had before the revolution in 1979. But, for the regime in
Tehran, the deal meant a guarantee for the continuation of its corrupt, abusive
system, along with some economic improvements to satisfy the angry people who
suffer most.
Maybe the time has come for a proper correction of the mutual understanding
between the regime and the Iranian people.

Socialized Medicine: A Dose of Reality
Ileana Johnson/Gatestone Institute/March 31/18
https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/12102/socialized-medicine
Although Britons do have affordable access to primary-care doctors, and everyone
in the UK is covered through high taxes, they are subjected to extensive waiting
periods for specialists, surgeries and hospitalization. The fact is that many
patients die waiting for treatment.
Rather than rejecting the basic free-market principles of the US economy -- as a
2016 Harvard University survey found that most do -- young Americans would do
well to ask themselves why it is that so many people from countries with
socialized medicine flock to the United States for treatment.
According to a recent Pew poll, support for universal health care, provided and
paid for by the federal government, is higher among American millennials than
among older generations. Young Americans seem to believe that socialized
medicine is a "cure-all" for health-care ills in the United States, as it
ostensibly is elsewhere, such as Canada and Britain.
Unfortunately, there are facts that would appear to put this fantasy to rest by
the facts -- for instance, the tragic and untimely death of a 20-year-old
British woman in her dorm room last March. Victoria Hills, a first-year student,
died of an ear infection, after "postpon[ing] visiting her campus general
practitioner because her student loan had not come through and she couldn't
afford the prescription."
There seems to be a myth that all medical care, procedures and drugs are free
under a socialized system. Although Britons do have affordable access to
primary-care doctors, and everyone in the UK is covered through high taxes, they
are subjected to extensive waiting periods for specialists, surgeries and
hospitalization. The fact is that in the West, as the ability of physicians to
provide services becomes stretched, many patients die waiting for treatment.
In communist – and former communist -- countries, the situation is even worse,
as the 2005 award-winning dark comedy, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, tries to
illustrate. The film portrays the medical tribulations of an elderly man in
Romania, transported by ambulance from hospital to hospital for an entire night,
while doctors at each location refuse to treat him and send him away. By the
time he is finally admitted to a fourth hospital, he needs surgery to remove a
blood clot from his brain. In a particularly poignant scene, one doctor
comments: "They have saved him so he can die from an incurable liver neoplasm."
The sad reality about the field of medicine in a former communist country such
as Romania is that old habits die hard. Having grown up in communist Romania, I
remember, after feeling ill, being taken to the polyclinic, to a room full of
other sick people, all entitled to "free" care. Some were there to receive
permission slips to miss work due to their ailments. Others were there for
injections. Still others were so ill that they could barely stand.
The system was "first come, first served." Everyone received a number and
waited, as at a food counter, to see a medical professional. Sitting on the
floor was forbidden; sometimes we would be forced to stand for an entire day –
occasionally until nightfall – before being examined by an overworked doctor,
who supplemented his "egalitarian" income with monetary or material bribes from
patients seeking quicker access and better care. After performing a perfunctory
examination, the doctor would give us a prescription and send us away. The
trouble was that the pharmacy in the nearby shopping complex had as little stock
on its shelves as every other store in the country. The pharmacist, who had no
ingredients with which to prepare the antibiotic the doctor had prescribed,
would simply shrug, and continue to earn his state income for doing nothing.
When my mother and I would return home empty-handed, my father would go out to
find the medication on the black market, paying at least ten times the official
price to obtain it. In spite of the harsh sentences presented to sellers and
buyers on the black market, many were willing to take the risk -- and extremely
grateful. It was the only way to fill the prescription, which was supposed to be
free in the communist "paradise."
After the triumph of obtaining the antibiotic, one found oneself in possession
of a mixed blessing. The cardboard capsules were the size of horse pills, so
large that even adults had difficulty swallowing them; for children, it was
nearly impossible. All attempts at getting down the huge pill without having
bitter powder fill my mouth were unsuccessful.
Moving to the United States, where doctors were paid on the basis of merit and
hard work, not according to a bogus ideological "equality" imposed by a central,
omnipotent government and its bureaucrats, was a blessing. American millennials,
a majority of whom seem to believe in ideological social experiments that may
have failed broadly elsewhere, have no clue about the literal and figurative
bitter pill that people living under socialist and communist regimes are forced
to swallow -- not only where health care is concerned.
Rather than rejecting the basic free-market principles of the US economy -- as a
2016 Harvard University survey found that most do -- these young Americans would
do well to ask themselves why it is that so many people from countries with
socialized medicine flock to the United States for treatment.
According to a recent Pew poll, support for universal health care, provided and
